Today, the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council gave a strong response to the increasing trend of curtailing - when not criminalizing - the activities of human rights defenders by limiting their right to access funding, especially when they come from foreign countries.

On 25 of February, the officers from the Ministry of Taxes and Duties of the Republic of Belarus came to the office of the Belarusian Helsinki Committee* without any prior notification. The head of the organization Aleh Hulak was handed in an arrest warrant and (or) a warrant to seize property and a notice of the actions to identify the property of the payer.

As a result the property that could be seized on the debts to the budget was not found in the BHC’s office.
